Are you looking to join two structural items together, hang heavy objects or make sure you have a robust fixture between structural steel and concrete items? Then you’re looking for either anchor bolts, expansion bolts, or a combination of these.
Anchor bolts are typically used to attach structural elements such as steel to concrete areas or surfaces. One end is embedded into the concrete while the threaded end is joined to the structural (steel) part providing support.
Which anchor bolts are best to buy?
You should determine the size required based on the strength needed for the weight or join you want your anchor bolt to hold and then choose from our broad range of lengths and widths available.
Also popular in this category are expansion bolts, which can be used to secure heavy objects to walls or floors perfectly suited to handling vertical or horizontal loads. By tightening the bolt, the nut on the opposite end is pulled into the shell while expanding outward and wedging it inside the hole in the wall or floor.
Remember that the principal force between anchor bolts and expansion bolts is different, respectively.
Anchor bolts:
- use a mechanical locking force to allow a smooth screw to be stressed
- are a permanent fixture that risks damaging the concrete should you try to remove it
Expansion bolts:
- generate friction by pressing whereby the force is applied
- are a less-permanent fixture and can be removed or pulled out at a later stage

Expansion anchors (and expanding anchor bolts)
Designed for use in masonry-based materials that provides holding power through expansion. Be sure to consider which of the two types of expansion anchors is best for the project you’re looking to complete, namely:
- Pre-expanded expansion anchors: inserted into the pre-drilled hole and then exerts force to create the holding power
- Un-expanded expansion anchors: requires the anchor to be set after it is installed into the predrilled hole in the masonry.
Expanding Screw Anchors
These inserts are typically made from plastic, metal or fibre and are used to help attach screws to brittle material/surfaces such as masonry or dry-walling. The most common of expanding screw anchors is the tapered plastic tube that is inserted into a closely-fitting drilled hole and then tapped in using a hammer (so as to be flush with the surface). A hole in the centre of the tube receives the screw which when tightened, expands outward so as to grip the screw anchor to the wall of the hole. These are available in various forms and lengths for varying levels of strength as required by your project.
