The engine parts in your car’s engine are in constant friction. While this is a part of the design, it is important that these parts are kept lubricated with the use of engine oils. Making use of a variety of engine oil types will reduce friction, help reduce wear and tear and keep the car from overheating (which is often a result of the unlubricated friction between mechanical parts).
The seven primary functions of engine oils are to:
- minimize friction and reduce wear
- keep engine parts clean
- reduce friction and therefore keep the engine cool
- form a dynamic seal in locations such as the combustion chamber
- cushion the blow of mechanical shock
- prevent/minimize internal component corrosion
- act as an energy-transfer medium
