Tips to Do-it-Yourself but Do-it-Safely

Buco 29 Oct 2018

Basic knowledge on Do-it-Yourself (DIY) safety is important when tackling any DIY project as it can be quite a risky task if you are not careful, especially for a beginner.

It’s important to consider the risk factors and the safety measures that need to be taken before working with power tools, toxic building materials, electricity or heavy equipment to prevent potential injuries.

So, we’re here to help you complete your project safely, and this is how:

  • Start by selecting the appropriate safety gear for the task at hand.
  • If you are unsure of what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required, then refer to the instruction manual before attempting to use any tools that you are unfamiliar with.
  • To protect your eyes from dust or flying shards, make use of safety goggles or safety glasses.
  • To protect your ears from intrusive noises, make use of ear plugs. Extended exposure to noises over 85 decibels (dB) can contribute to permanent hearing damage.
  • Wear gloves when necessary to protect your hands from injury or to prevent bacterial infection if you have an open wound.
  • Always ensure that your PPE is the correct size and fits properly.

Once you are set up with the required safety gear, inspect you tools before starting on a project, especially when using use power tools. It can be inconvenient and risky to work with power tools that have frayed power cords or cracked, broken casings. Power tools should also never be used in wet conditions.

In case you’re working in an environment with children, make sure you keep them away from sharp tools and toxic material, and remember to store your equipment out of reach.

Always use the right tool for the right job to avoid unnecessary delays. A first aid kit should always be kept on hand for emergencies, and, if possible, ensure that there is another person nearby who can assist in the event of an emergency. It can also be useful to print emergency contact numbers and place them in a visible area for everyone to access.

The most important aspect to consider before starting any DIY work is what safety precautions need to be taken to stay injury free.

Here are some easy to follow safety guidelines:

GENERAL SAFETY

  • Avoid wearing loose fitting clothes that could get caught in moving tools.
  • Ensure your workstation is neat and well-organised.
  • No need to rush. The slower, the better.
  • Store your tools away safely and securely once you’re done.
  • Make sure the room is sufficiently ventilated when working indoors.

SAFETY GEAR

  • Wear the right safety gear.
  • Make sure your safety gear fits snug, but comfortable.
  • Always ensure that you have a well-stocked first aid kit nearby.

SAFETY USING TOOLS

  • Make sure you’re familiar with how to use the tools correctly.
  • Ensure your tools are in good working condition.
  • Power tools should remain off and unplugged before changing parts.
  • Never cut towards your body when using a knife or sharp object.

ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING SAFETY

  • Electrical and plumbing should always be certified by a professional. Plumbing and electrical jobs are always tricky.
  • NEVER use water to put out electrical fires. Keep a chemical fire extinguisher nearby for this.
  • Always make sure your water supply is turned off when working on plumbing.
